Prompt Writing Workshop by Write Around Portland @ Powell’s City of Books

Start 2018 off with a resolution to write! Write Around Portland offers a unique generative workshop called Prompt designed for writers and aspiring writers in the greater Portland area who want to participate in a Write Around workshop and support the communities we traditionally serve who might not otherwise have access to writing and community.

Based on the acclaimed Write Around Portland model, this dynamic 10-week workshop incorporates our favorite writing exercises designed to inspire the writing life, including freewriting; work with writing elements; strength-building feedback and early-draft revision. The workshop caps off with a community broadside.

Pre-registration is required and is limited to 14 adults per workshop. Session 1: 10 Wednesdays, Jan 24 – Mar 28, 6:30-8:30 PM. Cost: $300 – Payment plans available. Cost includes free parking, snacks and access to the “Bowels of Powell’s.” (Accessing the “bowels of Powell’s” requires climbing a flight of 12 stairs.)

Proceeds help fund Write Around Portland programs, including our free workshops in hospitals, treatment centers, schools, senior centers, prisons, low income housing buildings and homeless shelters.

TIM WHITSEL lives on a 100-year floodplain outside Springfield, Oregon. He is passionate about western rivers, gardening, jazz, bicycling, wine and words. For six years Tim directed Windfall, a monthly reading series at the Eugene Public Library. He won first prize at the 2013 Northwest Poets’ Concord. In 2014 and 2017 he was honored with an artist’s residency at PLAYA. He can be heard reading his poems on thepoetryloft.net. Tim’s first collection, We Say Ourselves, was published in 2012 by Traprock Books. KELLY TERWILLIGER grew up on the Oregon Coast, and is the author of a chapbook of poems, A Glimpse of Oranges. She currently lives in Eugene, Oregon, where she works as an oral storyteller and poet/artist-in-residence in public schools.

2017 AGELESS AUTHORS SENIOR WRITING CONTEST

Ageless Authors, is a nationwide publishing project exclusively for writers age 65 and older, and invites your members to participate in our 2017 writing contest now underway.

The emphasis last year was on form, perfecting essays, short stories and poetry. This year will be the art of storytelling.  The contest deadline is  February 28, 2018.

Cash prizes will be awarded in each category; $100 for first place, $50 for second place, and $25 for third place. Winners and other outstanding entries will also be published in the second edition of Ageless Authors Anthology. Each submission requires an entry fee of $20 and the deadline for submissions is February 28, 2018.

The first Ageless Authors anthology, with almost 52 outstanding entries, is available on the website, at Amazon.com and from other booksellers.

Salem Poetry Project Featuring Lex Runciman @ Barrel & Keg

Lex Runciman, has published six collections of poems, including Salt Moons: Poems 1981-2016, from Salmon Poetry. An earlier volume won the Oregon Book Award. The chapter discussing his work concludes Erik Muller’s new book, Durable Goods: Appreciations of Oregon Poets. Now retired from college teaching, he lives in Portland, Oregon.
