Salem Poetry Project Mago Gilson @ Ike Box

Mago Gilson was born in Chiapas, Mexico as Margarita Moreno Zarate. She grew up in Boyeros, a town between Texcoco City and the University of Chapingo. In Chapingo she met her husband Jack Gilson, her English teacher. They moved to USA where Gilson decided became an excellent teacher and was recognized by the President of USA. Now retired, Gilson remains active playing her guitar, singing, dancing, and writing poetry.

Featured reader begins at 7:00 and the open mic will directly follow. Our hosts, the Ike Box, feature a wide variety of beverages and snack options!

Write Around Portland Free Community Reading @ First United Methodist Church

Join us to celebrate the release of our new anthology, Awake in Waves, featuring the talented writers from our fall workshops in schools, assisted living facilities, affordable housing buildings and other agencies. Few Portland events include so many diverse voices!

The reading is free, ADA-accessible and open to all. Books will be available for purchase. Free guided playtime for children is provided.

These readings are funded in part by generous support from: Oregon Cultural Trust, Regional Arts & Culture Council and Oregon Arts Commission.

Salem Poetry Project Featuring Ann Staley @ IKE Box

Ann Staley has published three collections of poems: Primary Sources, 2011, Instructions For The Wishing Light, 2013 through Booktrope Press, Seattle, Washington and Afternoon Sky, Harney Desert, 8th Street Press. She has been nominated twice for Oregon Poetr Laureate and once for an Oregon Book Award. She named herself the Poet Laureate of 8th Street a few years ago. Ann will be reading from a new chapbook, Age of Bronze (30+ poems and an essay) to be published in December. She hopes to have them available at her December Reading in Salem. Her favorite definition of writing: “Writing is thinking made visible.”
