Conversations With Writers – Monday, September 25
Chair, Desk, Lamp, Window, World: A Poet’s Progress

SUZANNE SIGAFOOS is the author of Held in the Weave, a poetry chapbook published by Finishing Line Press in 2011. Most recently, her poems have appeared in The Oregonian, in Windfall – A Journal of Poetry of Place, and the anthology The Knotted Bond: Oregon Poets Speak of Their Sisters. Sigafoos is an editor at VoiceCather, and is co-founder of River Rock, a Portland poetry critique group. “Green” is Suzanne’s first foray into non-fiction essay, and was published in the Bellingham Review.

Her conversation with us will look at early influences – and also the absence of influence – that shaped her writing life.

Conversations With Writers invites authors to read and tell us about their work and their writing methods. Not just a reading, but an event for audience members to interact and ask questions about word choices, styles, or the writer’s development of his / her art. It’s an informal atmosphere to help us all better understand the craft of writing. For more information, visit: cwwor.weebly.com

Oct 7 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Jayanthi Raman’s Dance of the Hummingbirds

Dance of the Hummingbirds is a musical dance project based on the seed concept of Portland choreographer Jayanthi Raman. The production reflects human being’s struggles and challenges faced in life and how one draws upon inner strength to overcome them. The project brings together the arts in one cohesive performance, addressing the complexities of a global artistic environment, presenting a contemporary dialogue of poetry, images, music, and dance.

The production features newly commissioned poetry of Oregon poet laureate Paulann Petersen, new music score; images of painting; choreographed by Jayanthi Raman with team of live orchestra of musicians and local Indian dancers. Medley of musical instruments and musical styles, creative artwork as visual embellishment and Indian folk and classical dance genres showcase the choreography as a contemporary multi-disciplined artistic conversation.

The project builds upon the central concept of every artist’s experiences of struggling with challenges in a new world and creating opportunities for themselves and those around them. The project brings together the arts in one cohesive performance, addressing the complexities of a global artistic environment, presenting a contemporary dialogue of poetry, images, music, and dance.
