Salem Poetry Project Featuring Jim Merrill
Jim Merrill grew up in the Bay Area near Berkeley and observed the Free Speech Movement on campus with keen interest. He worked as a skiing photographer after college and took bit-parts in movies in L.A. while writing screenplays until he settled into a teaching career at University of Colorado, where he studied the Beat movement with Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and William Burroughs as instructors. He has taught in China and immigrants from Central America. He moved to Salem to teach at Chemawa Indian School. His books of poetry are, “Blues Fall Down Like Rain” and “The Lust of Experience” and he has produced a creative writing manual, “You’re a Genius All the Time”, after a quote by Jack Kerouac.
The Salem Poetry Project continues virtually. Each week presents a featured reader followed by the Infamous Open Mic: 3 poems or five minutes whichever is first. Featured reader begins at 7:00 and the open mic will directly follow. For zoom details contact Marc Janssen at [email protected]
