Salem Poetry Project Featuring The Beat Poets
So much about what people think about poetry comes from ideas about the beat poets. Marc Janssen and Jim Merrill will discuss and provide examples of beat poetry. Janssen is that guy who is around all the time. Jim Merrill grew up in the Bay Area near Berkeley and observed the Free Speech Movement on campus. While teaching at University of Colorado, Merrill studied the Beat movement with Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and William Burroughs as instructors. His books of poetry are, “Blues Fall Down Like Rain” and “The Lust of Experience” and he has produced a creative writing manual, “You’re a Genius All the Time”, after a quote by Jack Kerouac.
