The Studio Series Poetry Reading & Open Mic

Dan Raphael is the author of 26 books of poetry, most recently In the Wordshed (Last Word Press) and Maps   Menus   Emanations (cyberwit), which he’ll be reading from tonight.

Dan is one of the hosts of KBOO’s Talking Earth, America’s (if not the world’s) longest running radio poetry show. Also, most Wednesdays, Dan writes and records a current events poem for The KBOO Evening News.

Laura Winter lives in Portland Oregon with visual artist, Brad Winter, and Kinta, an orange tabby cat.  She is a past vice president for Oregon Community Foundation where she worked for 30 years. Winter is the author of poetry collections, broadsides, and performance projects.  Her poems have been translated into several languages. Winter’s recent book, noble scratch, roughly spoken, features visual artist Brad Winter.

Improvised music is influential in how Winter considers the use of the page and language. She performs with musicians, nationally and internationally, using language as an instrument.  When performing her poetry, the music of words is brought to the forefront for a captivating rendition of meaning.

Winter’s US-Mexico borderlands collaboration with photographer Terri Warpinski, Liminal Matter: Fences and Liminal Matter: Traces, is in numerous special collections, including Stanford University Library, Amherst College and Yale University.

Winter occasionally publishes TAKE OUT, a bag-a-zine featuring visual art, writing and music.  Pine Meadow Ranch, Playa at Summer Lake, and Caldera Arts are some of the residencies which have provided solitude for Winter to pursue her writing.   For more information, visit https://Laurawinterpoet.com

The Open Mic is open to all audience members. Participants can sign up before the start of the reading or during the break. In the interest of time, Open Mic readers are asked to limit their reading to three minutes.

The Ross Island Grocery and Café is a cozy space with capacity for 40 or so people. Tables are available, so people who arrive early can enjoy a light supper (i.e., a sandwich, salad or burger) while waiting for the reading to begin. If we run out of table space, folding chairs are available. A mic will enhance the readings. There is plenty of unrestricted parking on the streets around the Café.
