Mid-Valley Poetry Society (Salem-area OPA unit)
The MVPS meets monthly on second Saturdays in the Oregon State Library. The meetings are open to anyone in the greater Salem area with an interest in poetry. Those attending are invited to bring one or two poems of their own or by others to share with the group. Responses to these informal readings are consistently thoughtful and supportive.
At the January 2013 meeting, Christopher Wicks, one of the unit’s members, gave a presentation on his process of writing sonnets. More such presentations by unit members on their processes of writing particular kinds of poems are tentatively planned for future meetings.
The “Poetry Corner,” the MVPS’s monthly column in the Salem Statesman Journal, has now appeared for a full year. Each column focuses on a different Oregon poet whose work is represented in the Oregon Poetry Collection at the State Library, which the columns are intended to highlight.
A “Poetry in Performance” event, with featured poet A. Molotkov and an open mic, has been scheduled for Tuesday evening, March 5, 2013, at the IKE Box, a downtown Salem coffeehouse.
