keeping up with the kardashians

by Sophie App-Singer

we got that

blackgirlbutwhite calabasas okurrrr

acrylic tips gleaming diamondlike under spotlight

heatlamps lorde got postcode envy looking at us,

& who wouldn’t

we have it all &

thats an understatement

we steal who you are down to your skin & make it look easy

goldleaf thinner than trained waists & implanted cheeks

pastor kanyes name on our fresh church yeezys

our hair braided down slick & weaveoutrageous

& you call us thieves?!

boi, we wouldn’t know wrong if he cheated on us

we are postwest & we are loving it

you want to be us be with us but cant

our thighs tight in g wagons

our effortless flexes y/project/gucci/prada

if we snowpowder if we spraytan

our eyes stay on empty

we stare into your soul & you shake

surrender is the sweetest when all you do

is take

Judge’s Comments – David Biespiel

The writing in this poem is alive. It’s language electrified, like this run, some of the best writing in the entire poem: “goldleaf thinner than trained waists & implanted cheeks/pastor kanyes name on our fresh church yeezys/our hair braided down slick & weaveoutrageous/& you call us thieves?!”
